A denim jacket is nothing new to anyone who was a teenager in the 90s. They have solidly been around since and became the casual sister of a trench.
This spring/summer the denim jacket came back with a double bang! The classic style got a bit of a makeover but one thing remains the same – it is an absolute gem in any summer wardrobe!
Why? Think of all the dresses and tops you have in your wardrobe that have short or no sleeves. Think of how many times you would have loved to wear them but it was too cold. Well, I can bet that in 9 out of 10 times a denim jacket would’ve finished that look off perfectly.
I am particularly fond of denim jackets with dresses, both short and maxi ones. It’s an easy yet feminine look that will take you through the summer and will serve as a handy cover-up on holidays.
There are lots of washes and cuts around at the moment. The hottest versions this season have an abundance of rips, embroidery and pearl decor.
Which style to go for?
Well, it all depends on what you are planning to wear your jacket with. Keep the following in mind:
- The more distressed and ripped denim looks, the more casual the final look is
- The longer the jacket, the more careful you have to be with the silhouette
- The more on-trend detail the jacket has, the shorter the life span
Try to think in advance what you’ll be wearing the jacket with to keep the silhouette flattering. Longer styles work well with jeans but opt for a shorter cut if you are planning on wearing the jacket with dresses.
I’d give preference to lighter washes over dark indigo ones as they tend to mix and match easier with most colours and brighten up dark looks.
I talked so many clients this season into adding a denim jacket to the wardrobe and every single one of them was saying ‘How did I live without one before?’ So if you find yourself struggling to find the right cover up for the Irish summer, it is definitely one piece I would urge you to get!!
Where to buy a denim jacket?
Denim jackets do not go through the same wear and tear as jeans do, so even high street will offer decent enough quality. I have seen some gorgeous ones in H&M, Mango, Oasis, Zara, Topshop and River Island. It is probably the only wardrobe staple that I wouldn’t recommend heavily investing into simply because high street quality will be more than enough even if you end up wearing it on a daily basis. Unlike jeans that lose shape, the older the denim jacket looks, the more charm it has.
I have some ideas below to show you the potential of this handy little piece!
As you can see I went for some pretty basic styles which means that mixing and matching will be a no-brainer. That also means that even if you pull that jacket out of the bowels of your wardrobe 5 years later, it is not going to look dated.
I have lots more inspiration below!
Pay particular attention to how the jackets are worn – either effortlessly thrown over the shoulders or with the sleeves pulled/rolled up. It is the easiest way to give the look a contemporary feel. And just in case you are not convinced by blue, white is also an option! =>
Hope you got plenty of inspiration guys! I can guarantee that you will find an abundance of things in your current wardrobe that will be perfectly complimented by a denim jacket so hit the shops!
